"An Apple A Day..." helps your baby poop

Is your baby getting constipated with the introduction of solid foods?

When your baby goes from a liquid diet to one that includes solid food, it can slow their digestive processes down for a while as their body adjusts to digesting something more substantial than milk.

A gentle solution that can help increase the motility (processing speed) of their digestion is raw or lightly blanched apples.

When raw or very lightly cooked, apples increase the peristalsis (digestive mojo) of the stomach, hence the old adage "an apple a day, keeps the doctor away."

  • If it is warm outside (summer) and/or your child is robust and tends toward the warm side, try grinding up some raw apple into a sauce and giving them as much as they are willing to eat.

  • If it is cold out or your child is of a more delicate constitution or is sensitive to cold, lightly blanch or steam the apples for a few minutes before making them into a sauce.

  • If your child really isn't into eating apple, you can give them a few sips of freshly made juice (you can just strain the sauce) or even some of the water you cooked the apples in.

My son is enamored with drinking from a cup, and while most of what he drinks dribbles down his chin, enough gets in to be helpful. A little apple regularly can do wonders at helping to regulate their digestion.

Store bought apple sauce is generally too cooked to be of much use. The fresher the food your baby eats the more nutrient rich and full of qi it is.

It is always best to feed you child food that is room temperature or lukewarm as foods that are cold (right out of the fridge) take more energy to digest since the body has to warm them up to body temperature first.
